Charles Conwell Is Eager For World Title Shot

“I want my title shot.”

Those are the words of 2016 U.S. Olympian Charles Conwell who recently signed with Golden Boy Promotions.

Conwell, aged 26, trains out of the Soul City Boxing Gym in Toledo, Ohio. Though he was promoted by DiBella Entertainment to start his career, Conwell has joined forces with Golden Boy Promotions and he believes that is the partnership that will allow him to achieve his dream – a world title – something he has dreamed of dating back to his Olympic run in 2016.

“I am glad to be back,” Conwell confidently stated to BoxingScene.

Conwell last fought in November 2022, scoring a majority decision win over Juan Carlos Abreu.

That fight occurred on the MarvNation card that saw Regis Prograis win the WBC junior welterweight title over Jose “Chon” Zepeda. He sat out all of 2023 but Conwell is currently the No. 1 contender for the WBC junior middleweight title.

Sebastian Fundora and Serhii Bohachuk will fight for the WBC interim junior middleweight champion on March 30 as a part of the pay-per-view card of Tim Tszyu vs. Keith Thurman.

Fundora is the No. 2 ranked fighter by the WBC. Bohachuk is the No. 3 ranked fighter in the division. Conwell isn’t bothered by not getting the shot either, he just knows he will be ready when his time comes.

“I will be eagerly watching both fights on that card [Keith Thurman versus Tim Tszyu]. Keith Thurman versus Tim Tszyu and Fundora-Bohachuk. I will take either. I just want my shot next.”

The 26-year-old Conwell holds a record of 18-0, 13 KOs.

One interesting thing to follow is his weight-class within Golden Boy Promotions. Conwell fights in the same division as Vergil Ortiz. That could be a fight that occurs at some point given the position atop cards that Ortiz holds. Ortiz will need interesting opponents to continue his spot as a main event fighter but, for now, Conwell’s main focus is obtaining a world title.
