Carl Froch believes that John Fury interrupting Tyson Fury’s training team in the corner of his undisputed title fight against Oleksandr Usyk could have cost him the win.
Usyk came out victorious in a close fight for the undisputed heavyweight crown on Saturday. The Ukrainian was down on the cards heading into the second half of the fight but turned the tide by dropping Fury in the eighth. There seemed to be panic around the Fury corner as the fight was slowly slipping away. Fury’s trainer, SugarHill Steward, was struggling to tell his fighter instructions over the voice of John Fury, Tyson’s father. John Fury’s behavior had already been questioned earlier during fight week, after he head-butted a member of Usyk’s team.
Former unified super middleweight champion Froch, who was trained by the sole voice of Robert McCracken across his 12-year professional career, thinks that John Fury’s antics in the corner could have cost his son the victory. "John Fury interfering in Tyson's corner could have been the difference between winning and losing,” said Froch when speaking to Lord Ping.
“His coach, SugarHill, knows everything about the game; he was trying to give him instructions. How can Tyson focus on SugarHill and take on those instructions when he's got John Fury shouting down his ear and talking shit to him through the ropes. It's impossible. You can't listen to two people at once. That could have been the difference between winning and losing in a close fight. That interference in the corner could have cost Tyson the fight.”
