Canelo on De La Hoya : 'Oscar has a lot of issues with his life, says a lot of things, and he’s a hypocrite.'

Undisputed super-middleweight world champion Canelo Alvarez says that he has no regrets about splitting from Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions.

Canelo and De La Hoya parted ways in less than courteous circumstances in 2020, and legal action was lodged by both parties against each other to enforce their contractual rights before agreeing to an out-of-court settlement to bring the legal case to a close.

Canelo, speaking to the Breakfast Club, spoke about how he was promoted by De La Hoya in negative terms and branded him a hypocrite.

Canelo added that he remained loyal to Oscar and the promotional entity when many GBP (Golden Boy Promotions) fighters left for new pastures, predominantly with Premier Boxing Champions.

“I think if you see everything he’s doing … We are the only ones that stayed with him when everybody left him,” Alvarez said of De La Hoya on The Breakfast Club. “Because I’m loyal. I treat everybody like a family. And I do the same thing with Golden Boy, but I don’t think he’s that kind of person. I don’t know if he’s a good person or not, but he’s not the person he shows. Yeah, he’s all business. He’s like a guy who says … I never forget he said, ‘You need to give them (fighters) a little [taste so that they come back for more]. When I heard that, I took it [to heart]. A lot of things. I don’t wanna talk a lot about him.”

The 30th of September sees the undisputed super-middleweight champion kick off the start of his three-fight deal with PBC against Jermell Charlo, the current undisputed king at 154lbs. The fight will be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo feels that his former promoter has many issues in his life right now, which were documented in a recent HBO documentary in a bio-doc of De La Hoya’s life. Canelo continued to add that De La Hoya was in a rehab centre two days before his 2013 fight with Floyd Mayweather while emphasising that he feels that De La Hoya is a liar.

“I think he has a lot of issues,” Alvarez said of De La Hoya. “Oscar has a lot of issues with his life. I don’t really know. When I fought with Floyd Mayweather [in 2013], he was in rehab two days before the fight. Kind of bad. I don’t know really what happened there.”

“I think the same thing [that De La Hoya always seems to be lying],” Alvarez added. “He says a lot of things, and he’s a hypocrite. I think he’s that kind of person.”
