Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has reached the back nine of his career.
With 64 fights already under his belt, Alvarez figures to be in blockbuster bouts for the foreseeable future, but he’s previously stated that he plans to retire at the age of 37.
But first, the 33-year-old Alvarez will headline another Cinco De Mayo weekend fight on May 4, aiming to defend his undisputed super middleweight title against Mexican countryman Jaime Munguia.
Over the last few years, Alvarez has shown an avid love and passion for golf, playing in tournaments and nailing highlight-reel shots, working in practice rounds during training camps – and even starring in golf-themed commercials.
It has all led to Alvarez being involved as an executive producer for the golf-centric feature film “The Long Game,” which debuted in theaters this week.
Alvarez was inspired to support the movie based on the book “Mustang Miracle,” which tells the true story of five Mexican-American caddies who learned to play golf and then created their own course in Texas during the 1950s.
Alvarez has described his infatuation with golf as an “addiction” and hasn’t necessarily shut down the idea of a professional career on the links.
Until now.
“No,” Alvarez told BoxingScene when asked if he has plans for a career in golf. “I just want to play tournaments for fun.”
As Alvarez watched The Masters on television, he elaborated on his love for links: “I really enjoy golf, but to be a golfer, you need to start really young. I need to be true with myself. I'm going to enjoy golf a lot.”
Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs), the world’s fifth-highest-paid athlete, according to Forbes, said he is instead more interested in getting further involved in more Hollywood projects such as “The Long Game,” and focusing on his business empire, led by his canned cocktail VMC.
