Canelo Alvarez Dismisses Idea Of David Benavidez For Next Bout

This past Saturday saw an end to the Canelo/GGG saga. The third fight between the two champions ending in the favour of Saul Canelo Alvarez by way of an unanimous decision.

After Canelo bounced back from defeat to Dimtry Bivol in reasonably impressive fashion against an ageing Gennadiy Golovkin. Talk quickly turned to - Who’s next?

David Benavidez’s name was put forward in the post-fight press conference, Canelo’s response was no so receptive.

“It doesn’t matter if he is Mexican or not! When I say, I don’t wan to fight a Mexican, is because I represent Mexico. But I don’t care, I will fight anybody. What, you don’t think I want to fight this one Mexican Benavidez?

“Look, I hear his Dad talking a lot of shit. But look at what he has accomplished? Nothing! One single champion, Anthony Dirrell. Please, don’t let me disrespect myself guys, please!”

With boxing impatiently calling for a return of the Mexican superstar in another mouthwatering matchup, it looks as though boxing fans will have to wait a little longer than usual due to a hand injury.

“It hurts everywhere, I have had this issue since the Caleb Plant fight. I need surgery! I’m going to take the time my body needs. Last year I fought four times in eleven months. I need to take my time, maybe May or September, but I need to take my time.”

WBA Super World Light Heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (20-0) faces Gilberto Ramirez (44-0) next month in Abu Dhabi. If the Russian is successful you would imagine that would line up a rematch with Canelo upon his return. However defeat for Bivol or the impending layoff for Canelo could spell a number of scenarios.
