Calvin Ford, the trainer of Gervonta Davis, has thrown Isaac Cruz’s name into the hat for the sweepstake as to who Davis will fight next following his seventh-round knockout and dominating showing against Ryan Garcia.
Davis-Garcia was one of the sport’s biggest cash generators so far this year with the fifth highest earning gate in Las Vegas history, along with U.S pay-per-view sales in excess of 1.2 million buys, has solidified his standing within the sport as one of boxing’s new money men following the footsteps of his mentor, Floyd Mayweather.
Davis could ultimately pick and choose who he wants to face in the ring, something which is a harsh reality to swallow for some.
Isaac Cruz, however, has been picked by trainer Ford when speaking to ES News. “I’m a always say Pitbull,” when asked who he wishes David to fight next.
Davis and Cruz fought a toe to toe encounter in December of 2021. Cruz arguably gave Davi the hardest night’s work of his career to date, of which David sustained an injured hand for his efforts. Many predictions prior to the contest had expected Cruz to succumb to a knockout defeat. However, Cruz would lose the contest by a narrow unanimous points defeat across all three cards with two scores of 115-113 and a sole score of 116-112.
The contest had played out differently from most of Davis’s fights, with Davis on the back foot using his skillset and demonstrating that he could take punishment in the process, something which till that point had cast a shadow on how good Davis could really be. He ultimately passed the test.
In defeat, Cruz’s stock rose tenfold, and he has since secured two wins with victories against Yuriorkis Gamboa & Eduardo Ramirez, putting himself back amongst the lightweight contenders.
Ford has kept progress on Cruz’s progression since, and even of which Davis himself has been impressed with Cruz’s rebuild and is open to taking the rematch with Cruz.
“There were a lot of variables that they don’t know about. I want to make a statement and I know he (Davis) wants that fight too.”
