Benavidez, Morrell Respectful To Each As Potential Bout Looms

As we near the inevitable Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder fight week, on May 6th, the futures of two of the best super middleweight fighters in the world loom in the balance, as David Benavidez and David Morrell both await to see if they can land a fight against Canelo Alvarez - if not it seems they’d be content to fight each other.

David Morrell fought on the card knocking out a former Olympian in Yamaguchi Falcao, out cold in less than one round. Benavidez was in attendance for the fight and saw it happen. When both were asked about their peer it was a very uncommon answer in the modern landscape of boxing - we saw humility and respect for each other.”

Morrell, though respectful, is a bit tired of people downplaying his achievements as in a mere nine professional boxing bouts has amassed a resume that has most experts putting him in the top five of the super middleweight division. No small feat given that Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez are two of the top names in this division who have had lengthy pro careers. Morrell has been so impressive, so far - anyone who is not a top-ten opponent is seemingly viewed as a mismatch currently.

“Yeah, one hundred percent,” said David Morrell when asked if he will fight David Benavidez in the future by FightHype.com. “One hundred percent, but maybe [we don’t it] is okay. It is a good fight, I respect [Benavidez] and I think he respects me. He is a good fighter and that is a perfect fight.”

Benavidez, who last fought on pay-per-view in March across the street from the T-Mobile Arena, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, caught up with the media as he exited the floor. Benavidez has been actively pursuing a fight with Canelo Alvarez, but if for some reason that doesn’t happen a fight with David Morrell now seems to be a massive attraction, especially given the type of performance Morrell had on the big stage. As we turn our eyes to the match-up between Canelo and John Ryder, some astute fans will be having a glancing eye at Morrell and Benavidez’s social media feed to see what direction they go in as well.

“[Morrell] is a great fighter,” said David Benavidez when exiting the T-Mobile Arena and being interviewed by Fight Hub TV. “Yeah, I have been wanting to fight [David Morrell].”
