Andres Campos: Pressure is all on Sunny Edwards with Matchroom Debut

This time next week Andres Campos gets the chance to make history in a world title opportunity that came relatively out of the blue. The Chilean flyweight heads to London next weekend to face IBF world champion Sunny Edwards, the Englishman’s Matchroom debut live on DAZN.

“I feel so good, we have just arrived in England a couple of days ago.” Campos said in an exclusive interview for ProBox TV. “We got here 11 days prior to the fight to get rid of the jet lag and acclimatised to the timezone and just to settle in.”

A relative unknown on the global scene Campos (15-0, 4 KOs) is well supported in his native Chile, the chance for the country to name their first ever world champion rests on his shoulders.

“I’m very popular back in Chile right now because Chile has no world champion, it has never had a champion in boxing, I’m going to be the first. I’m here to make history.” He continued. “I’m here with a great team, there are 12 of us in fact. Phycologists, there are three different coaches, sparring partners, all kinds of stuff. I couldn’t be more prepared, all the hard work is done now, I just finished my last spar and I’ve never felt so ready.”

The 26 year old has trained and rubbed shoulders with some of the best in and around his weight class. Campos took part in world title training camps with Jason and Andrew Moloney as he worked his way up the ranking two years ago. However, Edwards provides a vast leap in opposition in the English capital. Campos’s last two adversaries in Gilberto Pedroza and Carlos Ruben Dario Ruiz leave very little to the imagination.

“We have never watched a fighter so much, the study has been intense.” Campos said. “You will see when we fight. I know Sunny Edwards very well. I have plans A, B, C and D for him. Overall we have over 7 hours of edited Sunny Edwards video. I don’t think he’s ever seen me fight, so I believe I’m at an advantage here. I know every movement he has. Every shoulder and foot movement I know what will come next. I know his body language inside the ring, I will know when and how he is feeling. I just need to concentrate in this fight and I will bring home the title.”

Campos comes in at a 10/1 underdog (subject to change) this weekend at the Wembley Arena when he makes his first attempt at a world title. The man coming in as the mandatory defense believes the odds work in his favour.

“The pressure is on Sunny Edwards.” Campos stated. “I don’t feel any pressure. I’ve had a great camp, I have a great team with me, I’m at peace with my preparation. This is Sunny’s first fight with Matchroom, so all the pressure is on him. For me? It’s quite nice to have no pressure, I’m very focused and sure about what I have to do. I feel very at home in England, the people have been great. The people of this country and the whole boxing world will see how well I prepared for this fight. I’m going to shock the flyweight division.”
