Alberto Puello’s (21-0, 10KOs) reign as a WBA world super-lightweight title holder is set to come to an abrupt end before it even started, along with scuppering the biggest fight of his career to date against Roland “Rolly” Romero (14-1, 12KOs). Boxingscene’s Keith Idec has reported that Puello has failed a VADA-administered drug test for a substance yet to be confirmed at publication.
Puello is now set to be stripped of his WBA world title, of which he claimed the then vacant title against Botirzhon Akhmedov in August of 2022 in Hollywood, CA. Puello would claim a split-decision victory against the former Olympian and world title challenger.
Romero, according to reporting, is now set to box for the soon-to-be vacant title and most likely fight the current mandatory challenger, Ismael Barroso (24-3-2, 22KOs). Barroso was already scheduled to fight on the same promotion as Puello & Romero on May 13th at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Promoters of the May 13th promotion, TGB Promotions and Mayweather Promotions are yet to respond to reportings of Puelle’s failed anti-doping tests at the time of publication.
