Abner Mares Wants Oscar Valdez

Abner Mares returned from his hiatus from the sport of boxing since 2018, this year to fight Miguel Flores to a split decision draw, but Mares is eyeballing big fight the type of fights that probably inspired him to comeback to the ring.

“I’m not happy with ending my career with a draw,” said Mares to Hans Themistode of BoxingScene.com. “If I did as good as I did in this last fight, and I stay in the gym and I fight again, hopefully soon, I’m only going to get better.”

It looks like we will not be seeing many, if any, new fight dates in 2022 - and with that Mares is eyeing a return in 2023, early 2023. The name he wants another former world champion - Oscar Valdez.

“I think Oscar Valdez, I like Oscar Valdez for a big fight. He’s a big name, Mexican as well, it would be great. He brings in the power and he brings in the name.”

I am not sure how I feel about this, but Mares appears set that this is the marquee fighter that he has hopes set on fighting. Mares was set to fight Gervonta Davis in 2019, but the revelation of an eye injury forced him out of the bout. After years of passing tests, and proving he is capable of fighting - Mares is looking to get another big fight.

“I’m not trying to become a world champion once again. I’m just trying to get it out of my system. I’m getting my feet wet once again. I’m not calling anyone out at the 135-pound division.”
