This week’s Wednesday Night Fights were filled with eventful bouts broadcasted from El Domo Alcalde in Guadalajara, Jalisco. The event built up the hype around Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs John Ryder, which is taking place this Saturday night, May 6th, at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico.
In the main event, we had a great fight in the lightweight division between undefeated fighter Jonathan “La Roca” Lopez and Osvaldo “El Perro” Nuñez. The bout lasted only three rounds, with a stoppage at the 1:01 mark. After a furious three-piece combination from Lopez, “El Perro” suffered a deep cut over his left eye. Nuñez was checked by the doctor of the Jalisco Commission and was given the green light to continue, but the referee, Manuel Rivera, decided to stop the fight. The stoppage gave the TKO victory to the Puerto Rican fighter, Jonathan “La Roca” Lopez; his current record now stands at 11-0 8 KOs. This TKO puts Lopez at a six-fight knockout streak, while Nuñez is now 5-5.
The co-main event had another undefeated fighter, Lazaro “El Rey” Lorenzana, fighting against Alexis “The Hawk” Rios. Hailing from San Diego, California, Lorenzana won a controversial majority decision when judges, Rafael Cortez and Cesar Flores, both gave Lorenzana 77-75 on their cards; judge Simon Contreras scored the fight 79-73 for Rios. Our commentators on ProBox TV Español, Ricardo Celis, and hall of famer, Juan Manuel Marquez had their unofficial scorecards at 77-75 for “The Hawk” Rios.
In yet another controversial fight in the super bantamweight division, Guadalajara’s own, Oscar Hernandez, fought Joseph “Pulguin” Morales. Once again, judges Rafael Cortez and Cesar Flores gave the decision to the local fighter with a score of 58-56 in favor of Hernandez; judge Simon Contreras scored the fight 58-56 for Morales. With this decision Oscar Hernandez’ record is 5-1 2 KOs. His opponent, “Pulguin” Morales suffered the second defeat of his career.
The night began with a bout in the lightweight division scheduled for six rounds between the undefeated local fighter, Cesar “Chicharito” Ortiz, against 23-year-old Antonio Gonzalez. The 19-year-old Ortiz was always on the offensive, throwing constant combinations to Gonzalez’s body. Gonzalez seemed more worried about defending himself than going in for an attack. The Guadalajara local, Ortiz, gave his fans a night to remember winning by unanimous decision. Going the distance for the first time in his professional career. Ortiz stays undefeated, with his record now at 6-0 5 KOs.
