Omar Trinidad announced himself as a featherweight contender last night.
Trinidad stopped his Los Angeles rival Jose Perez in the eighth round of a scheduled 10-rounder that served as the main event of Tom Loeffler’s 360 Boxing Promotions card from Commerce, California.
Trinidad (15-0-1, 12 KOs) found himself in an action-packed back-and-forth fight with Perez (11-3-2, 5 KOs). The battle of 28-year-olds saw fans packing into the venue to support both fighters.
The most meaningful moments came in the seventh round. After six hard-fought sessions, Trinidad floored Perez. Trinidad finished the fight in the eighth when he dropped Perez again, who got to his feet, but couldn’t continue.
The time was 1:07.
The bout was a Fight of the Year-type bout that will fly under the radar but shouldn’t.

Junior welterweight David Romero (5-0-1, 1 KO) of Los Angeles, California picked up a six-round unanimous decision win over Luciano Ramos (2-4) of Stockton, California. The scores were 60-51 on all three cards.
Featherweight Adan Ochoa (13-4, 6 KOs) of Downey, California picked up a second-round technical knockout over John Mark Alimane (8-6-1, 4 KOs) of the Philippines. Alimane suffered an injury and was unable to continue after the second round.
Women’s flyweight Brook Sibrian (2-0, 1 KO) of Coachella, California stopped Nikkia Williams (0-2) standing in the third round. The time of the stoppage was 1:29.
Super-featherweight Abel Mejia (3-0, 2 KOs) of Orange, California got a four-round unanimous decision over tough journeyman Luis Montellano (3-13, 3 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico.
Women’s flyweight Guadalupe Medina (5-0, 2 KOs) of Maywood, California picked up a majority decision win over Lilian Almaraz. The scores were 40-36, 40-36 and 38-38.
