Junior middleweight Tim Tszyu is tired of waiting for Jermell Charlo as he fought Tony Harrison in March and appears to be ready to return in June with or without the undisputed 154-lbs champion, Charlo.
No opponent has been named, but Tszyu is refusing to be an inactive fighter as he spoke with a major national media outlet, Fox Sports AU. Now it is a waiting game to see who Tszyu will face.
One name that recently was brought up was Liam “Beefy” Smith, who recently knocked out Chris Eubank Jr. Smith is a natural junior middleweight who fought Eubank Jr. at middleweight to land a pay-per-view level fight. Smith is arguably having the best year of his career and if he were to fight Tszyu it would see the best fighter in the month of January fighting the fighter with the biggest knockout of March.
“I’ll tell you name that has come up is Liam Smith,” said Jake Donovan on the Lazy and Jake call-in talk show on Saturday mornings, as the well-respected journalist Donovan commented about a rumor that Smith could land the big fight.
As for Tszyu, he believes the reason Charlo is taking his time is that after injuring his hand, Tszyu believes Charlo now understands just how hard of a fight he is, and is no longer willing to fight him unless properly prepared. Tszyu wishes to continue to stay active, so he is not going to wait around as Jermell Charlo and his brother Jermall Charlo have been fighting rather infrequently over the past three years.
“I think he understands this isn’t an easy fight for him,” explained Tszyu to Fox Sports AU. “I think before he was taking me lightly.”
