EXCLUSIVE: Tiger Johnson Promotes Prenice Brewer To Head Coach

A very good professional, and a decorated amateur, Prenice Brewer has been promoted to the lead voice in the corner for Delante “Tiger” Johnson's professional fights, starting with his fight on April 1st, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as he fights Alfonso Olvera, in an eight-round junior welterweight bout, which will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Johnson, best known by his ring name, “Tiger” was one of the high-profile signees from the 2020 U.S. Olympic class, as he was one of the major signings for Split-T Management and Top Rank Inc., respectively. The hopes seem to be from the outside looking in that, Johnson enters the Prospect of the Year conversation this year and starts to climb the world rankings in 2024. Now it is Brewer’s job to make the adjustments to mold a world champion.

Johnson had been trained since an amateur by Renard Safo, one of the best coaches in Cleveland, Ohio history producing a slew of great fighters. Johnson now is looking to adapt more to the pros and is looking to Brewer, who fought twenty-six times as a professional.

“First off, I want to say, Safo is one of the best amateur coaches in the country if not the best coach,” said Brewer, who now will take over the reins as the head coach of “Tiger” Johnson. “I am humbled by Johnson’s decision to put me in this position, but also want to speak to the fact that it was a team effort and that everyone along the way made this possible, and Safo is instrumental in ‘Tiger’s’ success in the past, and those fundamentals he taught him will be at the forefront of his future success.”

This will be Johnson’s second scheduled eight-round fight, as he stopped Mike Ohan Jr., on December 10th of last year, this fight on the ESPN+ prelims will be his first of the year. Though according to the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar, 2022 was the year of the tiger, Johnson is looking to prove that in fact, 2023 is the year of the Tiger.

“The goal is to keep doing what we are doing,” said Brewer, who you might have recently seen as an assistant coach to his longtime friend, Terrell Gasuha when Gausha knocked out Brandyn Lynch on March 4th of this year. “The goal is to not just get to the top, but be ready once we get there. We will continue to grow, and I believe you will see one of the best fighters to come out of the United States emerge over the next few years and his name is Delante ‘Tiger’ Johnson.”
