News broke this afternoon as RingTV.com's Joseph Santoliquito was the first to report that the IBF, WBA, and WBC world champion Errol Spence Jr. and WBO welterweight world champion, Terence Crawford might finally meet in the ring. The alleged date, July 22nd with no venue given, but the city of Las Vegas, Nevada would host the event, with the bout being shown on a Showtime pay-per-view.
The bout would end a needed drought in the welterweight division, as despite being one of the most exciting divisions in the sport as a whole - the stagnation of big fights has led the division to a snail’s pace.
For example, Crawford has fought three times since 2020, as he stopped Kell Brook in that year, stopped Shawn Porter in 2021, which was his last fight on Top Rank Inc. contract, and knocked out David Avanesyan in December of 2022.
That said, Crawford has held the WBO welterweight world title for nearly five years as he has made six title defenses. Crawford was previously the lightweight world champion and the undisputed junior welterweight champion prior to his championship run at welterweight.
Errol Spence Jr won his world title in 2017 against Kell Brook and has made six defenses of the IBF welterweight title while picking up the WBC welterweight title when he defeated Shawn Porter and the WBA welterweight title when he defeated Yordenis Ugas in his last fight, which was his only appearance in 2022.
Since 2020, Spence has only fought twice. Once against Danny Garcia and once against Yordenis Ugas.
The winner of this bout would be the best welterweight since the Mayweather era, and an undisputed welterweight champion
