Sampson Lewkowicz on Canelo vs. Benavidez "I believe Canelo’s contract expires after his next fight"

The fight most sane fight fans want to see in the super middleweight division is the hall-of-fame Mexican prizefighter, Canelo Alvarez, who holds all four of the world titles and is an undisputed world champion in the division currently, taking on David Benavidez, his fiercest rival who has been waiting in the wings for some time. Benavidez most recently pounded out a twelve-round decision over Caleb Plant in March of this year on pay-per-view and has been campaigning to land the Canelo fight since.

Sampson Lewkowicz is David Benavidez’s promoter, and beyond that, he is also one of the busiest and most successful people in the sport of boxing. Better known simply as Sampson, he promoted a show on ShoBox near Sacramento, California on Friday night with Northern California boxing legend in the promoting business Paco Damian, and had a plethora of fighters competing in Carson, California the following day on Showtime. Not many people can say they are that busy in the sport of boxing. At the fights on Friday night, ProBoxTV caught up with Sampson and talked about the chances of seeing David Benavidez versus Canelo Alvarez in the fall

“I [will] say it again, Eddy Reynoso is a big man, he used to call me teacher,” said Sampson. “So I believe [Eddy Reynoso is still my friend], but the people want [the David Benavidez fight] for the legacy of Canelo, and he will get paid well, because he will make more money with Benavidez than anyone else.”

When asked if David Benavidez and his team are willing to travel to the network most commonly thought of in terms of promoting Canelo Alvarez, which DAZN. Sampson dropped a shocker, though purely speculation, he announced something we had yet to hear prior that he believes that Canelo is not exclusive to any network after this fight on May 6th against John Ryder.

As for Sampson’s expectations on what is next for David Benavidez. The famed promoter truly believes the next fight that makes sense is Canelo Alvarez as he explained it very clearly for any willing to listen.

“We believe next will be Canelo [Alvarez], if he wants to keep the [WBC super middleweight world] title, stated Sampson. “[David Benavidez] is the mandatory [for Canelo Alvarez].”
