On Wednesday afternoon, Oscar De La Hoya on behalf of his foundation, the aptly named Oscar De La Hoya Foundation donated more than $25,000 in state-of-the-art boxing equipment for its eighth annual giveaway to five, Southern California boxing gyms. The event which saw De La Hoya make a public appearance, at Duarte Boxing Gym, one of the gyms selected this year in the build-up to a fight week for “Zurdo” Ramirez vs. Gabriel Rosado that is having a slow simmer at best, which happens Saturday, March 18th in Long Beach, California, on DAZN.
During his public appearance with the media, De La Hoya, was asked about the fighter he promoted for over a decade, Canelo Alvarez. Even more so, Marcos Villegas of Fight Hub TV, asked him very clearly his thoughts on facing John Ryder as his next opponent.
“I think it is great Canelo Alvarez is going back to his roots, going back to his hometown, I think it is special, [Golden Boy] his last promoter to promote [Canelo] in his hometown,” said De La Hoya to Marcos Villegas of FightHub TV. “It makes me happy that he is going back and doing it for his people.”
It was announced this Tuesday, March 14th, that Canelo Alvarez would defend all four of his super middleweight world titles, the undisputed crown at the division against John Ryder, a mostly domestic European level fighter, who had a career year last year defeating Daniel Jacobs, and Zach Parker. The fight scheduled for DAZN pay-per-view on May 6th, will take place at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Though Ryder has a case to be made to be qualified to face Canelo Alvarez, the hall-of-fame boxer and now promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, wants to see Canelo Alvarez face the best possible opponents. De La Hoya had a few suggestions as well
“I think Canelo should really analyze carefully who he wants to fight next,” proclaimed De La Hoya to Fight Hub TV. “Whether it is Bivol, whether it is Munguia, but [Canelo] has to step-up and fight the tough opposition.”
