Floyd Mayweather on Errol Spence: I think he should be fighting at middleweight

Floyd Mayweather has weighed in on Errol Spence Jr.'s recent defeat to Terence Crawford, as Mayweather offers a simple solution. He believes that Spence should move up in weight - not just one weight class possibly two to three.

Mayweather believes that Spence should no longer compete in the welterweight division, and even suggests that his career should continue in the middleweight or super middleweight division.

“So if I was training him or I was in his corner, I don’t think he should be fighting at 147 [pounds] at all," said Mayweather to FightHype.com "I don’t even think he should be fighting at 154. I think he should be fighting at 160 or 168. That’s just my honest opinion.”

Mayweather's advice would see Spence fighting well above the current weight class he has fought in for his entire career Currently, the middleweight division features notable champions who also happen to fight on Premier Boxing Champions shows, the same as Spence Jr., such as WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara, Carlos Adames, who is the WBC interim middleweight champion and WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo. Any fight against those names would be an exciting match-up.

"With Errol Spence being under the PBC [Premier Boxing Champions] banner," said Mayweather. "If you're with PBC you are with Floyd Mayweather, period. You can not bring up Al Haymon's name without bringing up Floyd Mayweather's name. With that being said, I want the best for Errol Spence."

When looking at recent history, Canelo Alvarez found the most dominant division in his career being the super middleweight division, despite competing at a world-class level in the junior middleweight division. This might shed light on Spence moving up in weight could benefit him.

Spence Jr., right now is deciding if he will rematch Terence Crawford in December. As a rematch clause existed for their July 29th bout, which saw Spence Jr., get stopped in the ninth round. The bout was one-sided in Terence Crawford's favor, but Spence Jr. has the option of entertaining a rematch if he chooses given the time restrain specified in the contract to enact that. It has been rumored if that fight were to happen it would occur at junior middleweight.
