Former WBC featherweight world champion Mark Magsayo is no longer a featherweight, and will be returning in the fall says the head of MP Promotions, Sean Gibbons.
Magsayo, who is now on a two-fight losing streak, the first of his career after consecutive main event Showtime losses to Rey Vargas and Brandon Figueroa appears poised to look to become a two-division world champion in 2024. Gibbons outlines that Magsayo has had three very hard fights in sequence and now will be looking to regroup in a new weight class.
Magsayo, who was frustrated after his last result with Figueroa, had to take the whole two hours to make the 126-lb weight class limit. Prior to his current losing streak, Magsayo, had a fight-of-the-year contender in August of 2021, against Julio Ceja in which Magsayo knocked out Ceja in the tenth round. The bout saw Ceja get dropped twice, and Magsayo hit the canvas in the fifth round. This fight led to the biggest win of his career, a world title win over the long-reigning world champion, Gary Russell Jr.
“The weight [fighting at featherweight] took a little bit out of him,” furthered Gibbons. “So he is going to return in September or October at 130 [lbs].”
You can speculate all that you want as potential fights with Hector Luis Garcia, O’Shaquie Foster, a rematch with Gary Russell Jr., and many more linger. Gibbons is letting it known that Magsayo will be looking to make a statement at the top of the division.
“[Magsayo] will be looking for the biggest and best fights at [130 lbs].”
