The WBA has ordered their super featherweight world champion Hector Luis Garcia to make a mandatory defense against Lamont Roach Jr. with the fight to take place no later than May 20th, though per the excellent reporting of Jake Donovan of BoxingScene.com, this date is more than likely to get extended.
The bout could very well be for who holds the crown as the best 130 lbs fighter in the division, as Roach Jr., has been a battle-tested veteran, whereas Hector Luis Garcia has emerged as an unlikely star, who has catapulted his way to the top of the division and the sport.
“It has been a long-time waiting, and we have been anticipating this moment for some time,” said Lamont Roach Sr., the father, and coach of Lamont Roach Jr. “We can’t wait to accomplish our goal, and that is becoming world champion.”
Hector Luis Garcia last fought on January 7th, when he was stopped by Gervonta “Tank” Davis in the main event of a Showtime pay-per-view. Lamont Roach Jr. last fought on a Golden Boy Promotions in July getting a 12-round decision over a game against Angel Rodriguez.
By the rules of the WBA, neither fighter can pursue another fight, which might be something to take note of as Hector Luis Garcia fights under the Premier Boxing Champions banner, and Lamont Roach Jr. last fought for Golden Boy Promotions. Nothing hints at the fact that this fight wouldn’t be made, especially given Hector Luis Garcia’s warrior spirit in taking on tough opposition in three straight fights with Chris Colbert, Roger Gutierrez, and Gervonta Davis.
“Domination,” said Lamont Roach Jr., with a chuckle. “From start to finish, domination, and hopefully it is an early night.”
