Kessler calls for Eubank Jr to fight 'Canelo' Alvarez

Mikkel Kessler would like to see Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight Chris Eubank Jr.

Eubank Jr revived his career on Saturday when at the Manchester Arena he produced his finest performance to stop Liam Smith in 10 rounds.

Smith had become the first to stop him, when he won in four at the same venue in January, but under his new trainer Brian McIntyre, the 33-year-old Eubank Jr excelled from the opening bell.

Kessler remains widely recognised as one of the finest super middleweights of his ruthlessly competitive era, when his rivals included Joe Calzaghe, Carl Froch and Andre Ward.

Having since seen Alvarez establish himself as the world’s leading fighter at 168lbs and also Eubank Jr win at both middleweight and super middleweight, even with Alvarez, also 33, preparing to fight Jermell Charlo on September 30, in the event of victory Kessler would like to see the Mexican fight Eubank Jr next.

“What about Chris Eubank?,” asked the Dane, speaking to ProBox TV. “I’d like to see Chris Eubank against him.

“Not that I think Chris Eubank has a chance, but I would like to see that fight. Because I like Chris Eubank when he fights – he’s not a boring fighter. Always something happens.

“Maybe he loses some fights, and he hasn’t shown us his real powers yet – maybe. But he’s there and he’s ready, and he wants to fight, and he’s an intelligent fighter, so I’d like to see him against [Alvarez]. It could be a great fight.”
