The WBC flyweight world champion, Julio César “Rey” Martínez will return to the ring on Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez May 6th card at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, in which Alvarez will face John Ryder, that will be broadcast on pay-per-view.
Martinez will be in a twelve-round WBC world title fight against Ronal Batista, of Panama, who was given this opportunity after knocking out Jose Cordero. Batista is on a three-fight winning streak since losing to Mikhail Aloyan in 2019. The announcement was broadcast on the WBC's official website earlier this week.
If Martinez is successful, the flyweight division has a few names that could earn him a hefty sum of money, as Sunny Edwards recently signed with Matchroom Boxing and despite Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez breaking his jaw in his last fight, he could be a future opponent as well.
Martinez had a rough 2022 in which he lost a one-sided fight to future hall-of-famer Román “Chocolatito” González, and won a rather lackluster majority decision over Samuel Carmona. The exciting flyweight, Martinez, known for his brutal knockout power, is looking to remerge as one of the top names in the division, as last year he seemed to fall back a bit in the rankings.
Canelo’s trainer and manager, Eddy Reynoso, is also the manager of Julio Cesar Martinez.
