Two weeks ago, Mercito Gesta beat Joseph Diaz Jr. in a fight that served as the main event of a Golden Boy Promotions card broadcast by DAZN in Long Beach, CA, after Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez missed weight, and was unable to fight in the main event. After the fight, Diaz Jr. made headlines as he told EsNews that he was no longer with Golden Boy Promotions.
Within a few hours of posting that information, a representative from Golden Boy Promotions reached out to let us know that they were utterly confused about why Diaz Jr would say that. They explained Diaz Jr was still under contract. We recently caught up with Joseph Diaz Jr.’s manager, Rick Mirigian, to find out what is happening with the career of Joseph Diaz Jr.
Diaz Jr., a 2012 Olympian, has had a slew of distraction cloud his career over the past three-to-four years and now is riding a three-fight losing streak on top of that as he lost to Devin Haney, William Zepeda, and now Mercito Gesta, in consecutive fights.
“[Diaz’s] contract is not up completely yet, but it is up in May,” clarified Mirigian. “My job is to sit with Golden Boy [Promotions] and see if there is something there for JoJo.”
Diaz Jr. has been with Golden Boy Promotions since turning pro after the 2012 U.S. Olympics meaning he has been with his current promoter for eleven years. When you think of Golden Boy Promotions in the modern era, at least for me, Joseph Diaz Jr., is one of the fighters you think of.
“It is like a marriage, they have been together since the 2012 Olympics,” pointed out Mirigian. “Like in any marriage you have ups-and-downs, good times and bad times, I think overall they have always stayed together through thick and thin, and done stuff. Hopefully, there is something there that can be worked out, and if not JoJo will explore his options.
