Haney Responds To Shakur: "Shakur fought a guy that we never even heard"

Devin Haney conquered the world or at least the lightweight world titles in 2022, and now he looks to tackle a bigger challenge, a future hall-of-famer, in Vasiliy Lomachenko on May 20th, in Las Vegas, Nevada, on an ESPN+ pay-per-view.

Haney will have his first domestic fight since obtaining all four world titles from George Kambosos Jnr., who he beat in back-to-back fights in Australia which completed Haney’s 2022 campaign. After Shakur Stevenson made his lightweight debut stopping Shuichiro Yoshino in the sixth round of their fight on ESPN, on easter weekend. After the fight, Stevenson wasted no time to call out Haney, and state that he had gotten the best of their sparring. Haney recently went on the DAZN Boxing Show to comment on this situation.

Haney, who holds all the world titles in the division is not shy in the fact that he feels that he is at the top of the division, despite being very humble - also wants it to be known, he feels that he is the best and isn’t backing down from anyone.

“Right now we're in the same weight class and I'm the king of the division so no matter what we did when we were kids, I think I'm levels above everybody,” said Haney about his current status in the sport of boxing. "I feel like I'm the best fighter in boxing. I [feel] like I could beat all these guys in one night. So it is what it is, and I'm sure you feel the same way about me all these guys. probably feel the same way about me. We are competitors and I am a true champion. I'm not ducking and dodging nobody I'm not running or ducking from nobody my main focus right now is Loma the guy who was number one in the division for a long time, and the number one in the pound-pound-list [for a long time].”

As for Stevenson, Haney had his own words for him when speaking with the host of the DAZN Boxing Show, as he was not fond of the last opponent Stevenson fought. Though it was a mandatory fight, and the highest rated WBC opponent willing to fight him in eliminator, Haney wasn’t a fan of the match-up.

“I am not about taking stay busy fights,” explained Haney to the DAZN Boxing Show. “Shakur fought a guy that we never even heard of before. I never heard of him. I never seen him fight. He looked like he shouldn't even have been in a ring with Shakur [Stevenson] and look like he was just he was levels above them. It was a mismatch - one hundred percent. I'm fighting Loma, somebody who's who's validated somebody who is going into the Hall of Fame. It just shows you where my head is at and the type of fights that I want, and I look to show my skills on May 20th.”
