Kambosos vs Hughes rumored for July in U.S.

The former undisputed lightweight world champion George Kambosos Jnr will fight lightweight contender Maxi Hughes, according to Mike Coppinger of ESPN.com.

For those assuming the fight would land in Australia, you’d be wrong. The fight will land in Oklahoma, per the Coppinger report.

Kambosos Jnr, promoted by Lou DiBella’s DiBella Entertainment defeated Teofimo Lopez in 2021, to become the four-belt undisputed lightweight world champion. The result was one of the biggest upsets in modern boxing history, and Kambosos Jnr became one of the biggest names in boxing overnight. Kambosos Jnr’s victory over Teofimo Lopez ended a long saga in which the lightweight IBF title fight won via a purse bid by Triller, but after Triller lost the rights to the bout, Matchroom put it on at the end of the year.

Kambosos Jnr, fought twice in 2022 losing to Devin Haney in both of his fights that were fought in Australia. The nature in which of Haney’s victory being so one-sided somewhat muted the excitement for some around Kambosos Jnr as he was relatively uncompetitive in two fights with Devin Haney who traveled to foreign soil twice to win the undisputed crown.

This would be Kambosos Jnr’s first fight back since losing back-to-back fights.

Hughes is a comeback story, as he has fired off seven straight wins including his last one an impressive majority decision win over former featherweight world champion Kid Galahad, who fought Hughes at lightweight. During this time, he also defeated Jono Carroll, a former world title contender.

No official date was given at this time.
