Ryan Garcia opts for Rolando Romero fight instead of Devin Haney

Who will Ryan Garcia fight next?

It seemed it would be Devin Haney, but a post on social media implied it will be WBA junior welterweight world champion Rolando Romero.

Garcia boxed in December, stopping Oscar Duarte in the eighth round. It was Garcia’s first fight back following a pay-per-view blockbuster with Gervonta Davis. Despite being stopped in the seventh round, Garcia’s profile was elevated given the millions of dollars the pay-per-view made.

“I’ve notified my team I’m going a different route,” Garcia wrote on social media, of changing his mind about a fight with Haney. “My intent now is to fight Rolando Romero. I pray my team backs me on this decision. Oscar make this fight happen. THATS THE MOVE. BIGGER FIGHT, BIGGER BUSINESS.”

Earlier this week, Romero took to his social media to call for a bout with Garcia but yesterday, at an event to build-up Vergil Ortiz versus Fredrick Lawson this weekend, Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter of record with whom he is at legal odds, said: “I have instructions from Ryan Garcia personally that he wants Devin Haney. I think it will be a special fight. Devin Haney right now is on top of his game. He looked spectacular against [Regis] Prograis. He proved he is one of the best at 140lbs.

“I think Ryan Garcia versus Haney, that is the fight to make. I have already talked to his people, Haney’s people, and we are going to get this done, hopefully sooner than later.”

As for De La Hoya’s thoughts on a Romero fight. The Hall of Fame boxer-turned-promoter said: “We attempted, attempted and attempted [to make a fight with Ryan Garcia and Rolando Romero]. I have no idea the whole politics behind the whole Rolly not fighting for a while and still becoming a world champion. It just doesn’t make sense to me, and I like Rollies. He is actually a really nice guy. I like him.”

Haney, who seemingly wanted the Garcia fight, fired back on social media following Garcia’s message on X by writing: “Don’t ever mention my name pussy boi.”

Garcia has since responded to Haney with the following on social media.

"You'll be back #30KPPVBUYPUSSY."
