Canelo Alvarez recently picked up a twelve-round unanimous decision over John Ryder on May 6th in Mexico. After the bout, Canelo stated that he wants to rematch the WBA light heavyweight world champion Dmitry Bivol, the man who beat Canelo last May.
Canelo and Bivol though have issues over the weight the fight will be contested at, as Canelo wants the fight on the same terms at light heavyweight, whereas Bivol's side wants the bout for Canelo's undisputed super middleweight world titles. The hope is that if
“Call me crazy, he'll never beat Bivol at 175 pounds,” said Oscar De La Hoya to BoxingScene.co. “At 168 it might be even more dangerous for him because I think Bivol will be even lighter on his feet, he'll be faster. So, it's a difficult situation that Canelo is in."
Canelo Alvarez won the WBO light heavyweight world title when he knocked out Sergey Kovalev in 2019 but looked too small for Dmitry Bivol in their prizefight in 2022.
"The next fight that he takes has to be very strategic," furthered De La Hoya. "We'll see what his brilliant promoter [Eddie Hearn] does for him.”
