Welterweight Alexis “Lex” Rocha (23-1, 15 KOs) picked up a fifth-round technical knockout as he stopped Anthony “Juice” Young (24-3, 8 KOs) on Saturday night at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, which was broadcast on DAZN.
The fight saw an aggressive Rocha looking to make a statement after not being able to get his world title shot for the WBO welterweight title (Rocha is the current number-one contender), as the current champion, Terence Crawford opted for a unification bout with WBA, WBC, and IBF welterweight champion, Errol Spence Jr., let out some of his anger on Anthony Young. In the fifth round, Rocha dropped Young with a straight left hand from the southpaw stance, despite beating the count referee Thomas Taylor didn't like the way Young responded, as Young's legs never recovered.
The time of the stoppage was 2:15
“I knew [Anthony Young] was going to come in with the same energy he did when he fought Sadam Ali, and I was ready for that,” said Alexis Rocha. “I want the winner of the Spence-Crawford fight, and I am confident with the help of my amazing promoter, Golden Boy and Oscar De La Hoya, we’ll make it happen.”
We have a new world champion, Oscar Collazo (7-0, 5 KOs) won the WBO strawweight world title by defeating the champion Melvin Jerusalem (20-4, 12 KOs) via a seventh-round technical knockout. Collazo was relentless as a constant attack saw Jersalem not answer the bell.
Lightweight Oscar Duarte (25-1, 21 KOs) picked up a seventh-round technical knockout over D’Angelo Keyes (17-3, 11 KOs). Duarte sent Keyes to the canvas in rounds three and seven. The ring physician called a halt to the bout in round seven.
Unbeaten super-flyweight John “Scrappy” Ramirez (12-0, 8 KOs) won a split-decision over Fernando “Leoncito” Diaz (12-4-1, 4 KOs) in ten round bout. Two judges saw the fight for Ramirez, and one saw it for Diaz. The local fans didn't like the decision.
